Can You Do This Yourself
A dead opener is one of the few garage door problems a homeowner can safely poke at before calling anyone. Check the wall switch, check the outlet, check that the safety photo-eyes near the floor aren't knocked out of line or coated in dust.
Resetting travel limits
Reset the travel limits if the manual is still in a drawer somewhere. That covers maybe a third of the calls we'd otherwise get. What you shouldn't touch is the gear set inside the housing or anything involving the drive chain under tension.
Brittle opener housings
On a lot of Wolf Trap houses, built around 1981, the opener is either original or a direct swap for the original, and the housings on units that age are brittle plastic that cracks the moment a socket wrench slips.
Hum without movement
If the unit hums but the carriage doesn't move, or it moves and reverses itself halfway up, that's a motor or gear problem, not a settings problem, and it's not a safe DIY repair. Opening the housing on a unit with a worn drive gear usually turns a $40 part into a full replacement.

What It Costs
We don't post a flat number for opener repair because the range is wide and the parts involved aren't the same from job to job. A logic board swap is a different cost than a gear-and-sprocket kit, and a full opener replacement with battery backup is a different conversation again. Wolf Trap sits in a service area with a median household income over $176,000, and in Wolf Trap itself it runs higher still, so we see more requests for openers with battery backup and smartphone control than straight like-for-like swaps.
What we can tell you without seeing the unit: if your opener predates 2000, parts for it are getting harder to source, and at some point replacement costs less than chasing down a discontinued gear kit. We'll tell you straight when that point has arrived instead of billing you for a repair that won't hold.
Getting It Booked In
We run out of Leesburg, about 19 miles from Wolf Trap, so we schedule opener calls rather than roll a truck on a same-day whim.
Describing opener behavior
Tell us the brand on the housing and what the unit is actually doing - silent, humming, reversing, running but not pulling the door - and we can usually tell you what to expect before anyone drives out.

What You Are Seeing
Most of the opener calls out of Wolf Trap trace back to the housing stock. The area's homes went up mostly around 1981, consistent with the broader push of 1980s and 90s construction across this part of the service territory, and a chain-drive opener installed with a house that age is well past the point where the motor capacitor, the drive gear, or the logic board is the original part, worn out rather than broken outright.
The cold-climate swings this region sees add a second layer on top of that. A winter night's temperature drop can shrink a plastic drive gear just enough to skip a tooth, or throw a photo-eye bracket a few millimeters out of true, and either one reads to the homeowner as 'the opener stopped working' when it's really a half-stripped gear or a misaligned sensor. We see more of these calls after a hard cold snap than at any other time of year.
What the Fix Involves
Most opener repairs come down to one of three things: the drive gear and sprocket kit, the logic board, or the safety sensor alignment. We test the unit under load first - door up, door down, obstruction test - before opening anything, because a reversal problem and a dead-motor problem look identical from the wall switch but need different parts.
If the gear kit is the issue, that's usually a same-visit fix once we've confirmed the part fits the model. Logic board failures are more of a mixed bag; some boards are stocked, some aren't, and on an opener old enough to match a 1981-era house, we may need to order the part or recommend replacing the head unit instead of chasing a board nobody makes anymore. We'll always tell you which one we're looking at before we start charging for parts.
